BDAN & THE NYS LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY INITIATIVES

The health care we receive is increasingly affected by public policy.  This is because more laws and rules are being created to regulate health insurance and health care so people can get safe, quality, and affordable care.  Therefore it’s more important than ever for people with bleeding disorders to be involved in advocacy.

BDAN is a proud member of the New York State Bleeding Disorders Coalition, a partnership of the treatment centers and patient organizations serving the New York State bleeding disorders community.  Together we strive year round to ensure all people with bleeding disorders in New York get the care they need to stay healthy.

Over the last ten years, NYSBDC has successfully worked to:
– get coverage of at home clotting factor for children on NY CHIP
– helped ban high Tier 4 co-pays for medication
– helped create limits on step therapy for medications
– improve Medicaid policies for bleeding disorders patients

As a member of NYSBDC, BDAN helps create the NYSBDC public policy agenda – which issues and bills the Coalition will work on each year for the benefit of the community.  We also help organize the annual patient advocacy day program, called Albany Days, each year.

Additionally, BDAN works with local patient groups and treatment centers to develop and deliver advocacy skills training to patients and other community members.  This skill building is important for people who aren’t used to advocating, or want to improve their ability to work with legislators and others on community issues.  BDAN participates in the annual Albany Day patient advocacy program, and encourages everyone to become involved so we can build a better future for our community!.
